Designing a Laminate: Matching Layers to the Product

Structure design is a sequence of decisions rather than a single choice.

The sequence

  • Define what the product is sensitive to: moisture, oxygen or light.
  • Choose the format: sachet, strip pack, pouch or wrapper.
  • Assign the barrier layer: foil, VMPET or VMCPP.
  • Assign the seal layer: PE or CPP, matched to line speed.
  • Choose the print layer: PET or BOPP, matched to the artwork.

Then verify

  • Seal strength and solvent residue on your own line
  • Total structure performance against the sensitivity you defined
  • Documentation for the structure as supplied
